This semester I started taking German III on Rosetta Stone. It’s completely self-paced but has an outline of assignments to complete each week. The assignments teach vocabulary and grammar through listening, reading, and even speaking.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
All of my classes this year have been online and have required all of the self-directional skills that I’ve developed in the past to stay on top of. Without being required to go somewhere where teachers and peers are constantly motivating me to work it was extremely hard to stay motivated. The reason that I chose this class specifically for self-directional skills is that, while my other classes still had teachers or even peers to motivate me, Rosetta Stone doesn’t.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skills with this assignment?
I developed my self-directional skills through this class by having to learn to motivate myself by scheduling times to do my class and reminding myself to do it. I’ve also had to apply this to my other classes this year. By scheduling times for classes that could technically happen anytime, it motivates me to actually work on them rather than always waiting until right before assignments are due to do them.
What was most difficult about completing this task?
Even with a clear plan of when to work on my classes, it’s still hard to actually stick to it.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
I originally learned about blocking out times to work on classes from English 102 at the start of the year. Without it, it would be much harder for me to stay productive.
How can you apply this to future learning?
One of the main reason that I want to learn German is that I want to continue my education in Switzerland where German is the primary language.
