Not too surprisingly, ‘Intro to Sociology’ taught me a bit about global awareness. As previously mentioned, each week we’re given a written lecture with a plethora of related articles, videos, and even shows or movies sometimes. Some of the topics of the lectures and our research so far were social upheavals, Hawaiian culture, gender issues, and racial inequality. Learning about about different cultures and social issues gave me, as per the definition of global awareness, “understanding of the thinking, motivations, and actions of different cultures and countries.”
Sociology has made me much more educated about important issues that affect our lives as well as society as a whole. I’ve already been learning a lot about gender issues, racial inequality, and more through social media and my own independent research. This class had me delve even deeper into these social issues by teaching to see them from a more sociological perspective and trying to find ways to help solve them. Global awareness, like critical thinking, is becoming a foundational skill for our generation and society.
