In my sociology class this semester we get assigned a written lecture to read and then questions about that topic that we have to research and answer in a forum post. There was one specific forum on the topic of critical thinking that almost shows on a meta-level how I applied my information skills. My assignment for the forum was to research a social issue and then explain how I applied critical thinking to the research process.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?
Sociology has developed my information skills because having to do research for the weekly assignments has given me a lot of practice in critical thinking, using reliable sources, and finding the information that I need.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?
I’m most proud of coming up with a unique social issue to research because I got responses from people saying that they’d never even thought of overpopulation as an issue
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skills with this assignment?
This assignment taught me how to improve my critical thinking skills and had me immediately apply them. Critical thinking is a crucial part of information and pretty much all 21st-century skills
What was most difficult about completing this task?
The most difficult part of completing this assignment was choosing a social issue that I didn’t know much about and learning about it. Doing the research for the forum each week is the hardest part for me because it takes the most effort and motivation.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?
I’ve learned about critical thinking in almost every college and high school class I’ve taken, which goes to show how important it is. Despite already having a large base of knowledge this assignment still taught me even more ways to apply my critical thinking skills
How can you apply this to future learning?
The informational and critical thinking skills gained and developed by these assignments will benefit me in all areas of school and my career.
